Step up.
Speak English.

An open mic is where ordinary people step up and speak. So is the IELTS speaking room, the interview, and the meeting you have been dreading. Get coached, one tutor, one microphone, one honest diagnosis at a time.

Start with the goal

What are you stepping up for?

Pick your goal and we will show you only the tutors who coach it — with the band or format they specialise in.

How it works

Three steps, no mystery

No subscriptions, no auto-renewals, no video platform to learn. Credits, calendar, Zoom.

Step 01

Your First Open Mic

A free 25-minute 1-on-1 lesson. Your tutor hears you speak, names the specific thing capping your score, and gives you one drill to start on. Once per student, usable with up to two tutors.

Step 02

Buy a package

10, 25 or 50 lessons. Credits land on your account and stay valid for 12 months. Larger packages lower the per-lesson price. Unused credits are refundable pro-rata, less a $25 admin fee.

Step 03

Learn on Zoom

Book from your tutor's live availability in your own timezone. The Zoom link, calendar invite and reminders arrive automatically. Written feedback after every lesson.

Why this is different

A diagnosis, not a sales pitch

Most English tutoring fails for a boring reason: nobody tells the student what is actually wrong. We built the whole product around that one conversation.

  • One limiting criterion, named. IELTS speaking is scored on four criteria. Tutors tell you which one is capping you and show you the evidence.
  • Written feedback after every lesson. Not a verbal "good job" that evaporates on the walk home.
  • Recorded practice as homework. Students who never record themselves move at roughly half the speed.
  • Tutors are contractors, paid 75%. The 25% platform fee is shown to them before they apply. No dark patterns on either side.
Our promise

What we will never do

  • Promise you a score, or a band increase by a date.
  • Show fake testimonials or actors posing as students.
  • Run countdown timers or manufactured scarcity.
  • Let a tutor sell you a discount that is not on the pricing page.
  • Hide the refund policy in a footer.

That is the whole trust strategy. It is not clever, but it is rare.

Questions, answered plainly

What is OpenMic English?

A 1-on-1 online English tutoring marketplace for adults with a measurable goal: passing IELTS or TOEFL, or passing a job interview in English. Browse vetted tutors, book a free 25-minute trial, then buy lesson packages and take lessons on Zoom.

Is the free trial really free?

Yes. Your First Open Mic is a free 25-minute lesson, once per student, usable with up to two different tutors. No card is required and no lesson credit is consumed.

Do you guarantee a test score?

No. No tutor can guarantee a score — the examiner is independent and a test is one sample of your speaking on one day. What we do commit to is an honest diagnosis of which criterion is limiting you and written feedback after every lesson.

How much do lessons cost?

Tutors set their own price within platform bands: Standard tutors charge $18–$28 per 50-minute lesson, Examiner/Premium tutors $30–$45. Packages of 10, 25 or 50 lessons reduce the effective per-lesson price.

How do lessons happen?

On Zoom. Your tutor stores their Zoom link on their profile and it is included automatically in your booking confirmation and calendar invite.

What if I need to reschedule?

Rescheduling is free up to 12 hours before the lesson. Inside 12 hours the lesson counts as delivered unless your tutor agrees otherwise in their dashboard.

Can I get a refund?

Unused lesson credits are refundable pro-rata minus a $25 admin fee. Delivered lessons are never refundable. Refunds are issued by the platform, never by tutors.

Are lessons available in Spanish?

The site has a Spanish funnel at openmicenglish.com/es/ and several tutors teach Spanish speakers, using Spanish deliberately when a concept needs to land quickly. Lessons are in English by default.

Your first open mic is free.

A 25-minute 1-on-1 lesson with a tutor who coaches your goal. You will leave with the name of the problem and a drill to start on — whether or not you buy anything.
