OpenMic English is a niche marketplace: adults, one measurable outcome, 1-on-1, Zoom. No group classes, no children, no 40-student rooms. You keep 75% of your lesson price and set your own rate inside a band.
Stripe Connect or PayPal, your choice at onboarding. Students pay up front, so you are never chasing an invoice.
Of every lesson price. No hidden processing deductions on the tutor side.
Store your Zoom link once. It is included in every invite automatically. No in-house video tool to learn.
Before each lesson: student level, last lesson summary, and a suggested plan with prompts matched to their target band.
Nobody arrives "just to improve English". They have a test date or an interview. That makes lesson planning possible.
Every tutor is interviewed and QC-scored before students see them. It is slower than an open marketplace, and that is the point.
Applications land in the admin queue and are reviewed within 5 working days.
A recognised teaching certificate (CELTA, DELTA, TEFL 120h+, MA TESOL) plus verifiable experience with adult learners. Examiner/Premium tutors additionally need evidence of examiner training or a documented track record of students reaching their target band.
By goal, target band, price band, language spoken and availability. Featured placement on the home page is admin-picked from tutors with a 4.7+ QC score.
Weekly, in batches with a $50 minimum, via Stripe Connect or PayPal. A lesson becomes payable after the student's 24-hour dispute window closes.
No. Tutors cannot create coupons or discounts, and off-platform solicitation is a removal offence. Your rate is your rate.
Not always, but QC requires consent-based recording for the first 10 lessons. Both parties are told in-lesson, and recordings are used only for quality scoring — never published.
